C.2. Read the following description from a geography book and observe the use of Determiners.

The Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world, protect India from the cold winds blowing from central Asia and the People’s Republic if China. Mount Everest, the highest mountain peak of the world belongs to this range and is situated in Nepal. To the south of the Himalayas, the great northern plains extend between the mount of the revers Indus and the Ganga. The Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra start in the Himalayas. Start in Tibet. 2.       Name of a Peak: ‘The’ is not  used before a personal noun like specific peak or mountain.

For example: Mount Everest, Mount Kailash, Mount Sinai

3.       Cities: The is not used. Treated as a personal noun.

For example: Pune, Delhi

4.       Country: The is not used. Treated as a personal noun.

For example: Nepal, India,

5.       A country-name with words like ‘republic’, ‘union’ etc., does not take ‘the’ article.

For example: People’s Republic of China

6.       Rivers: we use ‘ The ‘ before the rivers.

For example: The Ganaga, The Indus, The Brahmaputra

7.       Lakes: ‘The’ is not used before lakes and bays.

For example: Dal lake, Lake Geneva, Sukhna Lake (Chandigarh)

8.       Deserts : The article is used before deserts.

For  example: The Thar desert, The Kalahari desert
